  1. Why Line, a Super App, Sparked a Diplomatic Dispute

Line is a Japanese Super App offering messaging, payments, and job searches. Originating from South Korea's Naver and partially owned by Japan's SoftBank, is currently at the center of a diplomatic dispute between Japan and South Korea. Japanese regulators, concerned about data security following a cyberattack on Naver, are pressuring the company to sell its stake in Line. This move has been perceived by South Korean politicians as an infringement on digital sovereignty and interference in a South Korean company's foreign investments, thereby straining the already fragile relations between the two nations​.

Telegram, a global messaging app, has launched a new internal cryptocurrency called Telegram Stars, effective from June 12. This new payment system allows users to purchase digital goods and services within Telegram's bots and mini programs. The move aims to bypass restrictive app store policies, particularly those from Apple and Google, which have previously hindered direct user interactions and transactions. Telegram Stars can be purchased through app stores, and developers can convert these tokens into Toncoin (TON). However, this shift has prompted warnings from Apple regarding compliance with its payment guidelines​.

Adani Group, from India, has launched a co-branded credit card with ICICI Bank on its Super App, Adani One. This initiative aims to enhance financial services and offer airport-linked benefits. The card, launched in collaboration with Visa, marks Adani's entry into the retail finance sector, competing with major players like Tata and Reliance. Despite the fintech ecosystem's growth, India has only a 35% penetration rate, indicating substantial potential. Adani One, aiming to reach 500 million users by 2030, underscores Adani's broader strategy to expand its business-to-consumer services​.
